I guess it's time I post some pictures of the lakeside walkway. Since I haven't had a lot of time(Actually FUEL money) to make some additional trips to the lake, I don't really have a lot of pictures that show much progress. I have had a lot of discussions as to my decision to use 6X6 post for my stairs/walkway instead of 4X4's, but those that know me, have no need to ask But if you must know: I believe in building it RIGHT the first time. If that means OVERKILL, than so be it







The posts are spaced for a 4' WIDE stairs/walkway. Holes were dug to 36" and back-filled with 12" of packed crushed rock before the post were installed. then a minimum of two 80 lbs sacks of concrete were added to "set" the posts. The only deviation was where we hit solid rock, in those cases, the diameter of the hole was enlarged to accomodate three 80 lbs sacks of concrete for stability. The 1 X 4's running horizontally are for measurement purposes only. As the project progresses, one will be able to understand my design.

SLOW PROGRESS
Spent a few hours on Saturday afternoon cutting down some trees that would have eventually damaged my new dock/walkway.
Tried to have them fall on our land, unfortunately, some didn't
Needless to say, Bill and I will be doing some major cleanup next Fall when the water level drops, allowing us to walk along the lower rocks at the shoreline. We were only able to get two additional posts installed of the last four we needed to install(Ran out of concrete) but we did get the other two holes dug. In two weeks, I will be headed out there again to install some sod in the front yard. We'll probably get the remaining two posts installed and start framing the landings... Man, I'm tired and OUT of money!
Man, the water is DIRTY! Looks like one of our local lakes in Mississippi called Arkabutla!

Couple more pictures.

The boatdock finally showed up.

Here is a shot from the deck on the house so you can see the walkway previously documented and the boat dock. The 'deck' on the roof of the dock is not there yet. I drew it in on this photo to show what it will look like.



This is a shot standing on the swim pier on the dock looking back up at the walkway and house on the hillside.

Here's a pic from when they flooded (part of) the valleys to fill the reservoir. They chopped a lot of the trees down lower then flooded it. The 'shoreline' of the lake is about where the yellow line is.

You can see why you can walk to the end of the boatdock and you're in 50-70' of water already!

Parts of the lake are close to 400' deep. There are entire villages down there. The lake covers over 21,000 acres w/ 550 miles of shoreline!

Check out this spiral staircase these people use to get down to their boat dock. No freakin' way man.





Of course if you have your own jet chopper I guess you don't have to worry about such things. Shesh! (yeah thats a slide going down to the lower level from the top)

I haven't been by that house in awhile. I'll have to see if I can find it again and take another pic.

I just realized that in the original walkway the 'man deck' wasn't there. Looking at this picture (also above) you can see the little 'side' deck we added on just to hang out on in the evening. Its pretty awesome. The handrails still are not up but we've gotten into so many other issues right now that we haven't had time.

We were working on the handrails for the Lakeside Walkway over the weekend.

The weather was beautiful. I even got some sunburn with the mid-70's temps.

Anyway, we basically just calculated and cut the vertical 6x6 posts to the proper height and angle to build the railings. We have to extend two of the 6x6's because they were too short when we put them in thus causing more work for us now.

The railings are just going to be a horizontal 2x6 caping the top with a vertical 2x6 notched into the 6x6 posts undneath.... going down the handrails. The railing across the back of the bottom deck will be different. When you sit in the chairs on the deck, the vertical 2x6 blocks too much of your view of the lake... so we're going to put a heavy 4x6 across the top (cap) of the posts across the front and right side (the rear - stepping off to the hill behind the lower deck) will be open.

Then a couple stainless steel cables across the back and side to keep the little ones from falling off. The cables are thin enough to not bother your view of the lake.

We'll be down working on this in a few weeks so I'll have some pics of the progress then. Extending those two 6x6's is probably the next thing along with the 4x6 cap across the bottom.

Oh yeah, we got the stump (down below the walkway just in front of where the boathouse gangway mounts) out over the weekend too.

Ivan must have deleted his photobucket account. I'm sure it wasn't on purpse. LOL.

I actually have all those missing photos somewhere I think. I'll try to track them down.

This weekend we were finishing up the hand rails. He's not even done and now he's planning a new deck to add to it.

It's like that house that they keep adding rooms to?
